PRESENTED BY Ralph Mercado.
CONTACT INFO  Club phone 212-593-7575.
TYPE OF EVENT & VENUE Newly renovated night club with nice atmosphere, a medium size wooden dance floor and a full bar.  As with many commercial clubs, the music is very loud and sometimes there are all kinds of flashing rotating lights.  There is plenty of seating around the dance floor plus a somewhat secluded lounge section off to the side.

MUSIC A mix of classic, commercial salsa and "salsa romantica" plus a little cha cha, bachata & merengue.   Surprisingly for a brand new club, the sound system is somewhat distorted with poor equalization, not very clear, and sometimes the volume can be excessively loud.
DANCE PERFORMANCES Very occasionally. They would be listed on our Main Calendar.
DJ DJ Wreck, DJ Johnny Famolari and other guest DJs.  DJs do some "mixing" & "looping" manipulations of the music like what you hear on FM radio station La Mega.
BAND Every week.  Usually starts around 9:00 - 9:30 PM.  They would be listed on our Main Calendar.
DANCE FLOOR Excellent medium size wooden dance floor which is "medium speed".  At certain times, it gets very crowded.
PRICES Prices change over the months.  Contact the club for current prices.  Club phone 212-593-7575.  Dinner guests get free admission to the club; make reservations.
BEVERAGES AND FOOD Full bar with high drink prices.  There is also a restaurant with "Latasian" (Latin & Asian) cuisine and reports have been that the food is quite good.
DRESS CODE From dressy casual up to quite dressy.  Office attire.  Dress for a night club.  Dress "in good taste", no sneakers or boots.  Men must wear dress shoes.

DANCE TIMING

Maybe 10% - 20% are dancing "New York On 2" timing and style.  The rest of the people are dancing on various different timings.  You may want to consider bringing some "On 2" friends with you to the club if you want to be sure of a partner.

DESCRIPTION Very attractive newly renovated club (formerly Denim & Diamonds), LQ is the new version of the previous Latin Quarter which used to be located on Broadway and 96th Street.  The new club has an excellent medium size wooden dance floor ("medium speed", not slippery, not sticky), an active dressy after-work bar & social scene with typical high drink prices and plenty of room for standing around and people watching.  Usually there is a free buffet from 6:00 to approximately 7:00 PM.  Age 21 and over, ID required.

OTHER INFORMATION

Please Note:  Commercial clubs are established to please their customers & make a profit.  If they get enough complaints or suggestions, they will often make changes.  As mambo dancers, you should make every effort to let the management & DJ know what type of music you want to hear, what volume & lighting conditions you want, how the dance floor should be, etc.  If enough salsa lovers give their opinions to management & DJs, they will listen.

Also, since commercial clubs have high expenses and need to make a profit in order to stay open and continue playing lots of salsa, they will therefore cater to the customers who spend the most money.  Mambo dancers can help get what they want by spending more money at the bar, even if it's sodas, fruit juices, virgin cocktails, water, sports drinks.  You may think you're smart by not buying anything at a club, but actually you are pushing them to play more merengue, bachata & English music, because customers who prefer this music spend more money at the bar.  If you want commercial clubs to feature more salsa nights, you have to pay for it by purchasing beverages at the bar.  This is just simple economics.  www.SalsaNewYork.com is not affiliated with any events or clubs;  we are just being realistic.
