DESCRIPTION
This party is happening at the Red Lounge, formerly Side Street Nightclub.
According to Side Street owner Artie Ramos, beginning in 1981, "the
original After the Beach Salsa Parties at Club Side Street" established
themselves as the place to be for all serious salseros in the City, and
the event ran for many years. Occasionally, other promoters & clubs come
along and try to plagiarize the name "Original After The Beach....", but
there can only be one existing club that is the "original", and this is
it. Side Street helped make the Bronx "El Condado de la Salsa" (the salsa
borough), and this club's party was running before any other existing
clubs were even operating. Now the legend continues, as they hold their
famous Sunday parties again, featuring a maximum of classic hardcore
salsa, a very reasonable $10 admission, a complementary buffet, a casual
and friendly atmosphere, and mambo dancers from all generations.
Everyone is welcome to enjoy the best in dancing and the rich history of a
New York salsa mecca. The current party is being presented by a
group of musicians who are making this historic club come alive once again
as a showcase for the best of New York's local salsa bands.
Between band sets, there will be a salsa DJ playing.

HOW TO GET THERE
The Red Lounge / Side Street
is located at 1332 Blondell
Avenue (1 block northeast of Westchester Square & Tremont Avenue), Bronx,
NY, on the downstairs level down the driveway. 347-584-8299.
Easy to get to (don't say you can't travel to the Bronx!).
. By Train - (easy ride) #6 train to Westchester Square, walk
left out of the train station, then walk a block northeast along
Westchester Avenue to Blondell Avenue, turn left and walk 1/2 block to the
club. Westchester Square is a big, well-lit busy intersection, where
Westchester Avenue, East Tremont Avenue and Williamsbridge Road all
meet. Return rides home are usually easy to
find: Just ask around the club to see if anyone has room in their car or
if people would like to share the price of a car service. Car
Services To & From The Club - Call any of the many car services that
will take you (usually in a Lincoln Town Car) to & from the club to
anywhere. The price for a ride in a car service is negotiable, depending
on destination and how hard you bargain, including multiple stops if you
are carpooling. Here are a few Bronx-based car services familiar with
the route: Unicab 718-328-4444. High Class 718-933-1111. Mega
718-328-3434. Bailey - 718-364-7878. Ultra - 718-992-8000. Bailey
718-364-7878. DAT 718-328-8888 and 718-542-2222.
By Car - Easy parking in the neighborhood, but read the signs
VERY CAREFULLY on Blondell Avenue because the night parking regulations
state which side of the street you can park on.
By Car from Queens, Brooklyn & Staten Island - Take BQE to
Triboro Bridge to Bruckner Expressway Rt. 278, then onto Hutchinson River
Parkway heading toward New England. Or you could take the Whitestone
Bridge onto Interstate 678 and onto the Hutchinson River Parkway heading
north toward New England. Get off at Westchester Avenue/East
Tremont Avenue exit, turn left at the stop light and diner onto East
Tremont Avenue. Continue until fork in road just before elevated train
(Westchester Avenue), then stay to the right of the fork in the road which
becomes Blondell Avenue. Cross Westchester Avenue, the club is up 1
block, on right.
By Car from NYC Eastside - Take FDR north to Harlem River Drive,
across Willis/Third Avenue Bridge, then right to Bruckner Expressway Rt.
278, then onto Hutchinson River Parkway heading toward New England. Get
off at Westchester Avenue/East Tremont Avenue exit, turn left at the stop
light and diner onto East Tremont Avenue. Continue until fork in road
just before elevated train (Westchester Avenue), then stay to the right of
the fork in the road which becomes Blondell Avenue. Cross Westchester
Avenue, the club is up 1 block, on right.
By Car from Westchester County - Take Hutchinson River Parkway
towards Whitestone Bridge. Get off at Westchester Avenue exit. At first
stop light, make a left onto Waters Place, then make an immediate right
onto Westchester Avenue (under the elevated train). Proceed under the
elevated train for two blocks until Blondell Avenue. Make a right onto
Blondell Avenue, the club is up 1 block, on right.
By Car from Connecticut - Take I-95 to Bruckner Expressway
(I-278). Get off at East Tremont Avenue exit. Proceed straight at light
to East Tremont Avenue. Make a right onto East Tremont Avenue. Proceed
several blocks until fork in road just before elevated train (Westchester
Avenue), then stay to the right of the fork in the road which becomes
Blondell Avenue. Cross Westchester Avenue, the club is up 1 block, on
right.

OTHER INFORMATION
ID required for
admission to the club. Please Note: Commercial clubs are
established to please their customers & make a profit. If they get enough
complaints or suggestions, they will often make changes. As mambo dancers,
you should make every effort to let the management & DJ know what type of music
you want to hear, what volume & lighting conditions you want, how the dance
floor should be, etc. If enough salsa lovers give their opinions to
management & DJs, they will listen.
Also, since commercial clubs have high expenses and need to
make a profit in order to stay open and continue playing lots of salsa, they
will therefore cater to the customers who spend the most money. Mambo
dancers can help get what they want by spending more money at the bar, even if
it's sodas, fruit juices, virgin cocktails, water, sports drinks. You may
think you're smart by not buying anything at a club, or sneaking in a bottle of
water or liquor, but actually you are
pushing them to play more merengue, bachata, Reggaeton & English music, because customers
who prefer this music spend more money at the bar. If you want commercial
clubs to feature more salsa nights, you have to pay for it by purchasing
beverages at the bar. This is just simple economics.
