INSTRUCTOR REVIEW
(Originally posted on Salsaweb NY)
Angel & Addie Rodriguez are the two head instructors of another popular NY mambo school called Razz M’ Tazz (RMT). The couple teach their unique style of mambo at different places throughout the New York area. One of their best known spots is at the Dance Manhattan Dance Studio situated at 39 West 19th Street, 5th Floor, NYC 10011; where they teach their main workshop/class every Saturday from 2-5 p.m.

Angel & Addie are no strangers to the mambo dance world. With their motto of "Add a little Spice to your Life", the couple has danced together, separate, alone or with their Dance Company (The Razz M’ Tazz Dance Company) on stage with such greats as Tito Puente, Oscar DeLeon and Ray De La Paz; at events like the NY Puerto Rican Day Parade, RMM’s "El Concierto de Amor" at Madison Square Garden and "La Combinacion Perfecta Tour". Not to mention appearing on film for movies like "Carlito’s Way", "Gotta Dance" (for the American Movie Channel); on t.v. for shows like Sesame Street; and in various Latin videos like Addie’s performance for the Oscar DeLeon’s "Mentiras" video. The couple also completed a 3 week tour of Italy where they taught and performed.

Angel & Addie’s aggressive RMT school teaches an estimated 22 different classes each and every week. They have started 2 separate dance programs at New York University and have been known to teach at various community centers, including Anti-Drug and Anti-Violence programs.

RMT teaches a different "on 2" timing method for the basic step than the one taught by Eddie Torres. Without going into great detail, the RMT way of timing to the clave and performing the basic step requires the dancer to move on the 2,3,4 - 6,7,8 beats (whereas the Torres "on 2" method uses the 1,2,3, - 5,6,7 measures of the clave). For a greater description of different Salsa/Mambo timing, listening to the calve and the basic step go to www.salsaweb.com/salsafreak/steps.htm

The first thing I noticed about the RMT school is that they are very social oriented organization from the moment you step into class. Students receive name-tag stickers after registering. This is a great ice-breaking method as well as a smooth integration method for new students wanting to be known and form part of the group. RMT also provides students with numerous social events to help students bond, integrate and network with one another. These activities range from social practice dance parties to group trips.

The Saturday class I attended consisted of an estimated 60 students (a testament to the RMT’s popularity). Angel & Addie were very up-tempo and generated positive energy to the entire class from the get-go and it was equally reciprocated to them by their students. The students I might add, seemed fiercely loyal and proud of the Rodriguez dancing couple as teachers, dancing role models and as friends. With the help of assistant instructors, Angel and Addie divided the class into 4 smaller learning segments according to skill level. Each group had one leader for each gender (one male, the other female). Students could then choose to emulate the shines or "jazz step" moves by watching the leader of the same gender (the guys learn by watching the guys; and the girls by watching the girls). Each leader ran through all the "shines" or "jazz steps" assigned to their particular group by breaking it down to a verbal count and later to music. The same procedure was followed during the partner segment of the class. Students move up to the next category when they have mastered the "steps" designated to their current learning level.

Angel & Addie's Style in a nutshell:
If I were to compare Angel & Addie’s style of mambo to other instructors, I would say it had a hustle look & feel to it, high in energy with a series of turns, spins and counter turns thrown in for good measure. If this is what you are looking for in your dancing, then RMT may be the school for you.
