DISCLAIMER FOR THE INFORMATION ON THE TWO CALENDARS ABOVE - PLEASE READ ONCE
Below is a listing of other Latin events and clubs which are not on the main CALENDAR for ANY of the following reasons - However, many dancers may enjoy these events so they are worth checking out to see if they are enjoyable for you. Posting of events anywhere on SalsaNewYork.com, a private site, is at our discretion. See our Editorial Policy.
(1) An event may be a local studio practice party or small social which has mostly people from that studio in attendance. Such an event would have a lot of salsa music and all dancers would be On 2 although there may not be a lot of dancers of different levels (including advanced) or from different places. Generally, there should regularly be at least 70 - 75 people present, with a good percentage advanced dancers, in order to be listed on our Main Calendar .
(2) They may have less than 75% of the music played being "medium-speed, classic, mainstream salsa", or the way in which the music is "mixed" may not be enjoyed by the majority of "ON 2 purists" in my judgment. See our Guidelines For DJs & Classic Salsa Song List.
(3) I may have little or no knowledge of the music or the dancers at the event.
(4) They may not yet have established a track record so that I can accurately predict what the event will be like. Or they may have a history of events where the music or conditions kept changing and now cannot be accurately predicted by me with confidence.
(5) They may have conditions which make dancing ON 2 not appealing to the majority of the particular "ON 2 purists" represented by this web site.
(6) For any other reason, they may not be suitable for listing on the main CALENDAR section of this web site, but still may be enjoyable for many mambo dancers.
Be sure to call these events and places before going to them. I do not follow these events closely. Some clubs or events may have closed, changed their venue, or may have Latin or salsa only on certain nights. I have not been to many of these places. Some of this information comes from flyers I have received in the past, or listings in magazines or the newspaper, or feedback from other dancers. If you wish to dance "On 2", it may be a good idea to bring your own partner(s), or go with a group of On 2 dancers you know, in case there are no other "On 2" dancers at the place who dance in this particular way, or the people there tend to stay within their own couples or groups. If you have information that any of these places have closed or no longer Latin music, please contact me at salsa@nyc.rr.com so that I can update our information.
Special Mention Places - Some salsa dancers have reported enjoying the places listed on the 2 small calendars directly below. Or for some other reason, these places may be worth checking out to see if they meet your taste. Click your mouse on the blue underlined name of each event to get more information. Many other events and places are listed below these 2 small calendars, organized by geographical area. Just scroll down below the calendars.

EVENTS AND CLUBS IN MANHATTAN -
Be sure to call these events and
places before going to them.
I do not follow these events closely.
And they are listed here as non-ON 2 events. Some clubs may have closed, changed
their venue, or may have latin or salsa only on certain nights. I have not been to
some of these clubs. Some of this information comes from flyers I have received in
the past, or listings in magazines or the newspaper, or feedback from other dancers.
If you wish to dance ON 2, it may be a good idea to bring your own partner(s), or go with
a group of dancers you know, in case there are no other "On 2" dancers at the
place, or the people there tend to stay within their own couples or groups.
See any additional Manhattan events on the Calendars
at the top of this page.
Cafe Remy - 104 Greenwich
Street (near Rector Street, 2 blocks south of World Trade Center), NYC.
212-267-4646. Downtown latin club open Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays. Free
dance lesson with Mario Diaz on Wednesdays. Books name bands. I hear:
somewhat younger crowd, crowded dance floor, only a few "On 2", difficult
to navigate the dance floor. Music is a mix of various kinds of music.
Also, the dance floor is tilted, so when you spin, you start out in one place and end up
in another. See their web site at www.caferemy.com
. They also are involved with moonlight cruises during the summer, usually on
Wednesdays and Saturdays. I have no idea what the music, crowd or dance conditions
are on these cruises. Call 212-267-1065 for more info.
Dance Manhattan - Salsa Practice Session - 8:00 to 10:00 PM Mondays. Held at the Dance Manhattan Studios, 39 West 19th Street (between 5th & 6th Avenues), 5th floor, Manhattan, NYC. 212-807-0802.
El Nuevo Conquistador - Amsterdam Avenue on the corner of 172nd
Street. Friday nights from 7:00 PM until very late they have excellent
salsa by a great DJ. Very casual place with mainly a mature Dominican
crowd who mostly dance On 1. If you want to dance On 2, bring a partner or
group. Small dance floor, inexpensive drinks, music is very loud.
The place is fairly empty until around 11:00 PM and then it starts to fill up.
Again, the music is great!
Gonzales
Y Gonzales - 625 Broadway (between Bleeker & Houston), NYC.
212-473-8787. A Mexican restaurant and bar with live bands on certain nights
(Thursday, Friday & Saturday as of 1/08) playing a mix of Latin music, some salsa.
Depending on the night, especially on the weekends, this club can be very crowded,
with pretty chaotic dancing, mostly by a younger crowd that is on "no timing". G & G has a very popular bar scene, and a very
eclectic crowd and charged atmosphere. But you may wish to bring partner(s) just to be sure you'll have some mambo
company.
Horus Lounge - Salsa Mondays - 10:00 PM - 2:00 PM - A
small downstairs dance floor next to the full bar and an upstairs lounge with
hookahs. On all other nights, this is a belly dancing place but Mondays is
salsa. There is Mediterranean food cooked on wood fire grill. There
is a DJ playing mostly classic salsa with an occasional merengue.
Sometimes there is a salsa band. Horus Lounge is located at 510 Laguardia
Place (between Bleeker and Houston Streets), in the West Village.
212-677-1120. www.HorusCafe.com .
Click on
YAHOO MAP for location.
La Linea - 15 First Avenue (between 1st &
2nd Streets), Lower East Side, NYC. 212-592-3138. Sometimes on Wednesdays has
evening of soul, funk, salsa and Afro-Cuban, plus live percussionists joining in with
DJ. Call for schedule.
Mambo D Salsa Practica -
Join
Mambo D, Delille Thomas, every Saturday,
6:30pm - 9:30 pm,
at the new MAMBO D DANCE CENTER for 3
hours of dancing to salsa and cha cha hits from his 25-year collection. This is
the perfect opportunity to work out all the kinks in all these turn patterns or
open shines you learn in class or on the dance floor. All students and their
friends are encouraged to attend this guided practice where
Mambo D is at their
disposal to offer suggestions and answer any questions they may have. This is
a friendly environment where you can sharpen your salsa dance skills. A
Salsa/Cha Cha turn pattern/shine is taught at every practica. All
levels are welcome. Saturdays: 6:30pm
- 9:30pm. Admission is $10.
For information:
MAMBO D DANCE CENTER,
315 W. 36th St 10th Fl, Suite 1003, NYC. Call 917-400-2210.
E-mail: MamboD@MamboD.com .
Web site: www.MamboD.com .
Music Energy - Circle Line Boat Parties - A
local web site called www.LatinClubs.com
lists various events which feature a mix of salsa, merengue, house, reggae and
perhaps other music. During the summer, they provide information on boat parties
which go out for the evening in and around NYC. The promoters are stating that there
is approximately 50% salsa, 20% merengue, 20% house and 10% reggae played on the 3 hour
cruises, and then offer free admission to Latin Quarter, Bistro Latino, or other local
clubs after getting off the boat. Boat ride goes from 9:00 PM to 12:00 AM.
Advanced tickets are recommended. They also have club and special events listings.
ORCHARD BEACH - TROPICAL MUSIC FESTIVAL -
Bronx,
NY. Park Office - 718-885-2275. Free. This is an annual outdoor
summer event held for many years at the Plaza-Bandshell in Section 9, near the
concession stands and stairway, on the boardwalk at Orchard Beach. Music
runs from approximately 12:00 noon to 5:00 PM, consisting of live bands plus a
DJ in between sets. The music by bands and DJ is a combination of salsa
plus merengue, reggaeton and bachata mixed in, depending on the specific date, and the
bands are subject to change (we post the information the promoter gives us).
See below for dates and names of bands.
Please note that the promoters sometimes change the bands at the last minute
without telling us, so don't be surprised if the bands are different than we
have listed on our calendars.
Although there's no formal dance floor, people spontaneously dance in the area all around the stage and off to the side toward the concession stands and trees, all of which is pavement. Very friendly, casual, laid back atmosphere, with everyone in jeans, shorts, bathing suits, in sneakers, sandals, barefoot, getting up and dancing On 2, On 1, side-to-side, ol' Cuban style and every other way salsa can be done. The majority are not On 2, so if you want to be assured of On 2 partners, you may wish to go with a partner or a group. The beach is right nearby, so you can alternate between beaching, bathing and dancing. Plenty of food and beverages, and restrooms, are in the same area.
How to get there: Take Hutchinson River Parkway, Bruckner Expressway or Bronx & Pelham Parkway. Get off at "City Island & Orchard Beach" exits. Continue by following signs to Orchard Beach, generally staying left through any unmarked intersections, until you come to the huge main Orchard Beach parking lot on your right. From the parking lot, walk toward the water and the Boardwalk. At the Boardwalk, turn right and walk several hundred yards to the area around the sign that says "Section 9". On your right will be a bandshell-stage area. Click Here to see a Yahoo map which you can zoom in and out, to see exact location and how to get there. For public transportation info, click on New York Subway-Bus-Train Maps , or NY-NJ PATH Train Maps.
Please Note - Disclaimer: New York City area summer outdoor salsa events in general are subject to program changes and occasional cancelations for various reasons (band, DJ, weather, administrative mixups, etc.), so don't be too surprised if this happens. And the music may not always be as "pure salsa" as we would like. Also, the dancing conditions may be less than ideal, for example concrete, grass, dirt, sand, etc., so bring footwear that prepares you for any surface. I will state the dancing surface if I know what it is. My information comes from the most reliable sources I can find. In most cases, the information turns out to be accurate, but occasionally it is not. It is the nature of the beast. (Click The BACK Button On Your Browser To Return To CALENDAR).
SCHEDULE - The Orchard Beach shows will be hosted by Casper Martinez and DJ Wreck.
Click Here for weekly schedule of dates and bands.Parkside Lounge - 317 East Houston Street (near Avenue B), lower Manhattan, NYC. 212-674-9308 and 212-673-6270. Has salsa and Latin jazz and Cuban Soul after 11:00 PM on Fridays, featuring bands such as Mambo Macoco, TNT Mix, Latin Vibe Sextet, and others, and some dancing. Call for more info.
Sandra Cameron Studio -
Monday Night Practice Session - 9:30 PM - 11:00 PM. Free for students enrolled in Sandra Cameron classes, $5 for non-students. Hosted and DJ'd by Eddie Quiros with some occasional help from Miguel. Medium size studio with good dancer's wooden floor, mirrors, very casual. Only a few On 2 our way (1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7); most are either on 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, or On 1, and are at a beginning or low-intermediate level. Consider bringing your own partner or group. Excellent situation for reviewing, drilling, creating new moves, a practice space.
Friday Night Dance Party - 9:30 PM - midnight. Free for students enrolled in Sandra Cameron classes, $7 for non-students. Complimentary wine & cheese. Refreshments available. Separate studio rooms for salsa, ballroom, swing and Argentine tango, so the salsa room has almost entirely salsa music playing all evening. DJ is Eddie Quiros, a mambo instructor.
Sandra Cameron Dance Center, a mainly ballroom studio, is located at 199 Lafayette Street, between Broome and Kenmare Streets, a few blocks south of Houston Street, in SoHo. Phone - 212-674-0505. Transportation - #6 train to Spring Street station, and N & R trains to Prince Street station, B, D, F, Q trains to Houston. CLICK HERE to see a Yahoo map which you can zoom in and out to see exact location and how to get there.
SOB'S - 204 Varick Street, at Houston,
NYC. 212-243-4940. Usually salsa evenings are
on Mondays and/or Fridays. At other
times, SOB's plays a mix of Brazilian, Afro-Latino and some house music. Small dance
floor, which can get very crowded. Whatever the music being played on a particular
evening, a few of the dancers will know what they're doing, and the rest are just making
it up. So there's a lot of bumping and tripping on the dance floor.
Stepping Out Studio - Social Party -
37 West 26th Street (at 6th Avenue), 9th floor, downtown Manhattan, NYC.
646-742-9400.
Held most Fridays from 9:30 PM to 12:30 AM. This social/practice session has people
dancing a variety of ballroom dances in one room, and then a separate "Latin
room" with mainly salsa being played. Some people dance On 2 using 1,
2, 3, 5, 6, 7 while others are On 2 ballroom style 2,3,4, 6,7,8, and some on other
timings. DJ music, studio setting. Sometimes they have special
parties with a band, performance or dance contest. For further info, call the number above, or
email at
info@steppingoutstudios.com ,
and see their web site at http://www.steppingoutstudios.com .
Uptown Salsa Wednesdays @ Julia De Burgos
Cultural Center - Doors open 5:30 PM. Usually live band plus DJ Brian
or DJ Ron McGugins
spinning old school salsa. Mainly a Latino mature On 1 crowd but there are
a few On 2 dancers there. If you to be sure to dance On 2, bring a partner
or group. The place gets very crowded and hot so come prepared. No jeans or
sneakers. 1680 Lexington Avenue (between 105th & 106th Streets), Spanish
Harlem, uptown Manhattan. How to get there: Number 6 train to 103rd
Street Station. For further information: 212-831-4333. And to
