INSTRUCTOR REVIEW
(Originally posted on Salsaweb NY's very 1st review)
I'll start off by giving you information on Eddie Torres. Eddie was the recipient of The First Annual Salsaweb Convention Lifetime Achievement Award. Since then, he has received several other similar awards. All I can say is "ABOUT TIME". Eddie and his wife Maria have been doing this for years without the respect and recognition that they deserve. They have put a lot work and effort into spreading the art of Mambo dancing. For this and several other reasons, Eddie is one of my favorite Mambo teachers and considered by many to be New York’s Primo Mambo King. Eddie is the Grand Master of the "2" dancers. Everyone has gone through Eddie or has gone through someone who has gone through him.

If you want to be challenged then I highly recommend Eddie's Sunday class where he drills lots of open shines - something that I notice LA dancers lack. Its necessary to have a foundation in shines. A "shine" or "open shine" are a sequence steps that are done to the beat of the clave whenever you and your partner are dancing apart from each other. For example, the basic step is an open shine. Shines can be done with your partner in a follow the leader manner; a rapid showdown with your partner or just for fun. There are more than a hundred different standard shines. You can get a list and a breakdown for each shine (done in clave for men's or lady's timing) from Eddie Torres.

But if you hang tough its worth it. Eddie normally calls out the name of a shine and the class begins to perform it. After he runs through a seemingly endless list of shines, he asks the students to name the shines they want him to break down. He normally breaks down 5-10 shines. This way you can leave knowing at least 5-10 new floor shines.

Friday night is another one of my favorite Eddie Torres nights because he breaks down 2 to 3 different turn patterns.

Additional Info on Eddie Torres:
Eddie Torres has been teaching classes for what seems to be a zillion years, yet he teaches each open shine as if it were the very first time. His years of teaching experience allows him to impart priceless pointers and hints which help sharpen a student’s mambo technique and style. Single classes run for $20, while 4 class packages can be purchased for $60.

Eddie's Style in a nutshell
If I were to describe Eddie Torres's style of dancing, I would say that its smooth and refined. He moves with the grace of a Latin Fred Astaire, yet you can tell that he can feel the music. The man dances with SABOR and SWING. Watching Eddie dance is watching a master in motion. If you want to learn from someone who has the experience, the style and the roots of NY Mambo dancing, then Eddie Torres could be the instructor for you.
