Please Note: Commercial clubs are established to please their customers & make a profit. If they get enough complaints or suggestions, they will often make changes. As mambo dancers, you should make every effort to let the management & DJ know what type of music you want to hear, what volume & lighting conditions you want, how the dance floor should be, etc. If enough salsa lovers give their opinions to management & DJs, they will listen.
Also, since commercial clubs have high expenses and need to make a profit in order to stay open and continue playing lots of salsa, they will therefore cater to the customers who spend the most money. Mambo dancers can help get what they want by spending more money at the bar, even if it's sodas, fruit juices, virgin cocktails, water, sports drinks. You may think you're smart by not buying anything at a club, but actually you are pushing them to play more merengue, bachata & English music, because customers who prefer this music spend more money at the bar. If you want commercial clubs to feature more salsa nights, you have to pay for it by purchasing beverages at the bar. This is just simple economics. www.SalsaNewYork.com is not affiliated with any events or clubs; we are just being realistic. Copyright © 2007 Steve Shaw. All rights reserved.

REBA PEREZ / EMPIRE DANCE EVENTS -
SALSA AT THE SEAPORT - (summer 2006)Free - A happening "On 2" event held every week outdoors on Pier 16 of the South Street Seaport - Saturdays 6:00 PM - 12:00 midnight - Free basic salsa lesson @ 6:30 PM. See our Calendar for name of DJ for each date. This event is being presented by Reba Perez, one of the original founders of the former Salsa Nites @ Club Cache and Sexy Salsa Firdays @ The Parlour, and the founder and director of Empire Dance. She invites all the mambo dancers to come early for an evening dedicated to them, with pure classic salsa dance music played by DJ Babaloo , DJ Nelson Torres or DJ Frankie Martinez, who specialize in music for our way of dancing mambo. Held outdoors on Pier 16, right in front of Skippers Restaurant, just to the right of the main stage at Pier 17. From the main stage at Pier 17, walk to the right and then out the pier, just east toward the East River from Front Street underneath the FDR Drive. There's no specific "dance floor", but spontaneous dancing takes place in various sections by sometimes 200 people, some of which is "On 2". The surface is wood planks of the pier. I'm told by the ladies that shoes should be smooth leather soled (no sticky rubber soles), and that the surface is pretty good for shines & spinning. Shoes should have somewhat thick heels, no thin spike heels (you too, fellas), because there are spaces between the planks of the pier. About half the 200 people in attendance dance "On 2", but If you want to be assured of dancing "On 2" with many different partners, you may wish to bring some friends or a group. The event is cancelled in case of heavy rain. All the restaurants & bars of the Seaport are right nearby, so food, beverages and restrooms are readily available. Skippers Restaurant is right there next to the dancing so you have a full bar, complete casual food menu and tables and chairs for your comforts. And, of course, you have the river breezes and views plus the downtown New York skyline to feast your eyes on. For more info on this and the other South Street Seaport music events, and on stores, restaurants, hours, maps, etc., see their web site at http://www.southstreetseaport.com . For more information on this particular salsa event, contact Reba Perez at 212-645-2441, email Reba@EmpireDance.com , web site www.EmpireDance.com. The Empire Dance teaches all kinds of dance including mambo On 2 taught by Frankie Martinez and the Abakua Latin Dance Company .
These concerts are held on Pier 16 of the Seaport, located at Fulton and South Streets, right under the FDR (East River) Drive, right on the East River, next to the Fulton Fish Market (you can smell it!). How to get there - Subway: 2, 3, 4, 5, J, Z or M trains to Fulton Street Station, and A & C trains to Broadway Nassau station. Walk east on Fulton Street all the way to the river. Bus: M15 "South Ferry" to Fulton Street. Car: FDR Drive to Exit 3 "South Street". For exact location on a Yahoo map you can zoom in and out, click on MAP. For public transportation info, click on New York Subway-Bus-Train Maps , or NY-NJ PATH Train Maps . Copyright © 2006 Steve Shaw. All rights reserved.
Please Note - Disclaimer: New York City area summer outdoor salsa events in general are subject to program changes and occasional cancellations for various reasons (band, DJ, weather, administrative mix-ups, etc.), so don't be too surprised if this happens. And the music may not always be as "pure salsa" as we would like. Also, the dancing conditions may be less than ideal, for example concrete, grass, dirt, sand, etc., so bring footwear that prepares you for any surface. I will state the dancing surface if I know what it is. My information comes from the most reliable sources I can find. In most cases, the information turns out to be accurate, but occasionally it is not. It is the nature of the beast. (Click The BACK Button On Your Browser To Return To CALENDAR). SEXY SALSA FRIDAYS @ THE PARLOUR - 10:00 PM - 2:00 AM. See our Calendar for name of DJ for each date. This event is being presented by Reba Perez, the original founder of Salsa Nites @ Club Cache , promoter for Salsa Tuesdays @ The Parlour, and the director of the Empire Dance Studio. She invites all the mambo dancers to come for an evening dedicated to them, a night of pure classic salsa dance music played by DJs who specialize in music for our way of dancing mambo. Held in a club with a medium size dance floor which is "medium to slightly-slow speed" so wear shoes that are bit slippery. There is a full bar and plenty of lounging room next to the dance floor. Upstairs there is a full bar and complete restaurant with good food including snacks, hamburgers and full menu, with food served throughout the evening until 11:00 PM. Come early for dinner and then a night of partying. For more information, contact Reba Perez at 212-645-2441, email Reba@EmpireDance.com , web site www.EmpireDance.com , and see Special Parlour Page. The Empire Dance Studio teaches all kinds of dance including mambo On 2 taught by Frankie Martinez and the Abakua Latin Dance Company professionals.
The Parlour is located at 250 West 86th Street, between Broadway and West End Avenue, very close to Broadway, on Manhattan's upper west side. The 86th Street station of the 1/9 train is right there and the 86th Street cross-town bus goes directly to and from the club over to the east to connect to other west side and east side trains.

RON MCGUGINS EVENTS -
PALLADIUM MEMORIES @ THE ALLEN ROOM - FREDERICK P. ROSE HALL - A night full of dancing for everyone celebrating the Palladium mambo era - Friday, November 3rd, 2006, 7:30 - 10:30 PM, the 2nd in a series celebrating the early days of mambo in New York City's Palladium Nightclub. Held in a beautiful setting in the Time Warner Building overlooking Columbus Circle and Central Park, and presented by "On 2 Productions", this dressy event will feature The Original Tito Puente Orchestra playing some of the hits from the 1960's and before, the music that was played at the Palladium Club. There will be dance performances in the tradition of the Palladium era by Eddie Torres, Delille Thomas "Mambo D" and Jimmy Anton. In addition to dancing to the music of the band, there will also be dancing in between the sets of the band to DJ music of the maestros of mambo, dance music from the Palladium era, the 1960's and before, for everyone's dancing pleasure. For those who are not familiar with the Palladium, it was a famous New York club in the 1950's and 1960's which formed the beginning of salsa music, including the name "salsa". Most of the famous Latin bands played there and the New York style of mambo dancing was featured. In fact, many of the famous early mambo dancers would compete and show off their stuff at the Palladium, as did the many celebrities who frequented the club.

SANTO RICO SOCIAL - "GOODBYE TO BROADWAY" PARTY - Saturday, January 17th, 9:00 PM until late. After many years in their own studio on Broadway, the Santo Rico Dance Studio is moving to a new location. So they are throwing a last party at this studio which has served them so well. If you've ever been to one of the Santo Rico socials, you know how they party: they welcome everyone, there's great music, lots of dancers at all levels, there are performances, buffet style Spanish cuisine, beverages and you can bring your own liquor if you want, and they party until the last person leaves. For the performance groups - see our Calendar . Many of us have had the pleasure of seeing the Santo Rico Dance Company perform, with their exciting and innovative styles. And I can tell you personally that they are a friendly and welcoming group who love to dance and meet new people, so come to the party and bring your dancer friends. Dress is "casual....come as you are". The dance floor is "medium to a little slow" - so wear your medium to more slippery shoes, such as those with hard smooth leather soles (no rubber soles).
Also, if you want to get a little bit of that Santo Rico flavor into your own mambo dancing, consider taking one of their classes. On Saturdays, there is an All Levels partner work class from 4:00 - 5:30 PM. This class is listed as "Best Partner Work Class" in the Instructor Directory of SalsaNewYork.com. On Sundays, there is a Ladies Styling-Spinning Class from 2:00 - 3:30 PM (for those with prior On 2 experience, at least "advanced beginner"), and there is a Shines and Partner Work class for all levels held from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. SIDE STREET - "THE ORIGINAL AFTER BEACH SALSA PARTY" - Sunday - 9:00 PM until very late. 718-597-4565, 718-601-0737. According to owner Artie Ramos, beginning in 1981, "the original After the Beach Salsa Parties at Club Side Street" established themselves as the place to be for all serious salseros in the City, and the event ran for many years. Occasionally, other promoters & clubs come along and try to plagiarize the name "Original After The Beach....", but there can only be one existing club that is the "original", and this is it. Side Street made the Bronx "El Condado de la Salsa", and this club's party was running before any other existing clubs were even operating. Now the legend continues, as the original Club Side Street (downstairs) holds their famous Sunday parties again, featuring a maximum of classic hardcore salsa, a very reasonable $5 admission, a free buffet Latin dinner from 6:00 - 8:00 PM, a casual and friendly atmosphere, and mambo dancers from all generations. Everyone is welcome to enjoy the best in dancing and the rich history of a New York salsa mecca. Open from 6:00 PM to very late.
SIDE STREET - The club also has special events on certain Friday and Saturday nights. See Calendar for dates, events and performers.
SIDE STREET KIDS -
SIDE STREET KIDS 10TH ANNUAL BLACK & WHITE BALL - Saturday, March 10th, 2007. 9:00 PM - 3:00 AM. This very popular fund-raiser is held every year to raise money for the non-profit Side Street Kids Academy in the Bronx. The evening is a dressy dinner and mambo dance held at an elegant catering hall, the Eastwood Manor , complete with dance performances by the Side Street Kids. The band will be The New Swing Sextet, plus lots of classic salsa music played by DJ David Sala, one of the veterans from Club Side Street in the Bronx. This event is attended by mambo dancers from all over the City and surrounding suburbs, adults from young to mature. Many of us have attended this event every year and have enjoyed it greatly: good food, open bar, classy atmosphere, a dance performance, socializing with each other and the very friendly Side Street Kids community of parents, teachers and students, and lots of dancing. The music is mostly classic salsa but there is also some merengue and English music played. At some point in the evening, there are some speeches and ceremony honoring people who have helped the Side Street Kids organization over the years. This year's honorees are Manny Siverio and Steve Shaw, co-hosts of www.SalsaNewYork.com and long time contributors to the SSK Scholarship Fund, and also Addie and Gisela Barris of the SSK community.
And this fundraiser is for a very good cause: The Side Street Kids "mission is to empower youth with the necessary skills to understand and appreciate the importance of education, positive family interaction and cultural awareness through dance". The Side Street Kids dance team has performed in New York and around the country, and also in Italy, Puerto Rico, and at the Tito Puente Scholarship Fund Galas. The proceeds of this event will go towards the Side Street Kids Inc. Educational Fund, which helps SSK graduates attend college. The price of admission covers all costs for the night: Complete dinner, unlimited open bar, dance show, band, elegant atmosphere and many hours of dancing.
This is an adult-only (21 years old) non-smoking event. Guests should dress up elegantly with black & white attire suggested. Only those holding advanced tickets are admitted since no tickets are sold at the door, and advanced tickets do sell out before the event due to limited space (500 people), so I would advise you making reservations NOW.....don't wait. Tickets are a tax deductible contribution and all ticket sales are final. Tickets purchased before February 28th are $70. Tickets up until March 11th are $75. For more information and advanced ticket sales, contact Toni & Carlos Mendoza, co-directors of the SSK Academy, at 718-595-1000 or 718-829-7200, or email them at SideStreetKids@hotmail.com . One can place an advertisement or announcement in the program of the Black & White Ball as another way help them financially. Donations (including ticket purchases and journal ads) are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. See their web site www.SideStreetKids.org (currently being updated). Also, see Manny Siverio's REVIEW of the dance instruction at SSK.

SOB'S - LA TROPICA - MONDAYS - 204 Varick Street, at Houston, NYC. 212-243-4940. Free before 7:00 PM, $10 to $20 after that depending on the band (call). Free salsa lesson 7:30 to 8:30 PM, sometimes with Mario Diaz. Dancing before and after the lesson. Bands begin to play shows at around 9:30 PM. Music ranges from about 50% to 75% salsa, depending on the night and the band. Small dance floor, which can get very crowded, sometimes there are a few "On 2" dancers, sometimes not. If you want to dance a lot On 2, better bring your own partner(s) as insurance. On those nights when there are famous "dancer bands", such as Eddie Palmieri or Gran Combo, there are more ON 2 dancers present, but then the place is packed and there's not much room to dance. Decent bar, the bands tend to be excellent, the food and decor are good, and street-parking is relatively easy; but half the staff is unfriendly, and sometimes the DJ's make poor musical choices for dancing. "On 2" salseros' opinions vary on SOB's, some people love it, and wish there were more regular "On 2" people there to dance with, and others complain about the small dance floor, inconsistent music and clumsy fellow dancers. So this is one you have to decide for yourself. Note: SOB's sometimes changes bands or show, so be prepared, or call club on the day you wish to go. See their web site at www.sobs.com . SPICE SALSA NITE @ CLUB CACHE - (stopped being Spice 3/16/06) The only real mambo club in New York City! Thursday nights 10:00 PM - 2:00 AM. Very reasonable admission price. Free salsa lesson at 10:30 PM in separate room. One of the few Manhattan salsa events in a nightclub that is actually being run especially for the mambo dancers. In fact, it is being run "By Dancers For Dancers". Yes, that means a real nightclub with a dance floor full of "On 2" mambo dancers plus performances on certain nights almost always by "On 2" mambo dancers....you don't want to miss this! If you love mambo, this event is dedicated to you. There will be lots of classic salsa dance music played by guest DJs who specialize in playing the classic salsa we all love, and usually dance performances (see our Calendar for names of DJs and performing groups). Club Cache is a very attractive setting with a good medium size wooden dance floor (which is sometimes a bit "slow" so wear your more slippery shoes or bring powder), a full bar, comfortable seating and food available at a restaurant upstairs. "Dress to impress". The event is being hosted by Trey Parker of Spice Media . See Salsa Nite Flyer for discounts and special offers.
Club Cache is located at 221 West 46th Street (between Broadway & 8th Avenue), in the Times Square area of midtown Manhattan, NYC. The club is downstairs, and the entrance is a door between the Hotel Edison and Sofia Restaurant. CLICK HERE to see a Yahoo map which you can zoom in and out to see exact location and how to get there. For public transportation info, click on New York Subway-Bus-Train Maps , or NY-NJ PATH Train Maps. (Click The BACK Button On Your Browser To Return To CALENDAR)
Please Note: Commercial clubs are established to please their customers & make a profit. If they get enough complaints or suggestions, they will often make changes. As mambo dancers, you should make every effort to let the management & DJ know what type of music you want to hear, what volume & lighting conditions you want, how the dance floor should be, 6etc.

THE HEARTBREAK BOYZ SUPER SALSA PARTIES - Two years ago, the David Melendez's Heartbreak Boyz hit our NY/NJ mambo scene and brought with them their own special brand of great sabor, style, theatrical drama, technique and rhythm. And they also brought very friendly and gentlemanly attitudes which endeared them to those of us who know them. By now, they have performed nationally and at Congresses around the world. Furthermore, they know how to throw a party and how to light up the atmosphere. And in those two years, David's Starlite Dance Studio has since created the Junior Heartbreak Boyz, the Sweethearts and, most recently, Fuerza Gigante, performing groups we always love to watch.
And now come 3 parties to celebrate these fellow mambo dancers, to entertain us with performances, and especially to give us a place to dance. Held at Starlite Caterers, the dance floor is big, the music by DJ Nelson Torres is excellent, the dress is casual but neat, and there are plenty of tables for relaxing and socializing. Please note: these are adult parties, and they especially for us mambo dancers. And as always, when Starlite has a party, all levels of dancers come, including some of the best in the world. Starlite mambo parties get SalsaNewYork.com's "4 Thumbs Up" rating!
There are 3 parties scheduled, running from 10:00 PM until late (18 to party, 21 to drink). See Calendar for names of groups performing each night::
Saturday, Feb. 9th -
"Edwin Rivera's Farewell Party" - This Heartbreak Boy is going off to college.
Saturday, Feb. 22nd - "Isaac Crespo's Birthday Party" - This
Heartbreak Boy is joining the big leagues.
March 9 - "The Heartbreakers' Anniversary Party" -
It's the original Heartbreak Boyz's 2nd anniversary and the Junior
Heartbreak Boyz 1st anniversary.

WEST GATE LOUNGE - SIZZLING LATIN NIGHTS - Held in the nightclub of the Best Western Hotel, Nyack On Hudson, New York. 10:00 PM - 4:00 AM. Ladies free before 10:00 PM except on band nights - see Calendar or see the West Gate Lounge Schedule on their web site. A long running Saturday night event featuring some salsa music along with merengue, bachata and some English music. The West Gate Lounge is a very attractive nightclub with a full service bar and restaurant which serves food very late, tables & chairs for relaxing and socializing, good lighting, and a friendly crowd of people. There are 2 separate dance floors, one medium size and the other smaller, both of which are wood and a bit "slow" so wear your more slippery shoes. Salseros from NYC, New Jersey & Westchester County come occasionally to enjoy the dancing. Fellow New York salseros Geovonie & Hilda teach two On 2 mambo classes from 8:00 - 10:00 PM before the main event begins, one class is beginner and the other is intermediate/advanced. Regular cover charge is $10 unless there is a band, and then the price varies based on the band. Call 845-358-8100 for exact prices for the night. The 2 hour dance lesson is $15 which includes the price of admission for non-band nights. The dress code is "proper nightclub attire". For specific info on the dance class or private lessons, contact Geovonie & Hilda at 845-497-9847 or 212-709-7831 (ask for Kwame).

Very complete travel directions from all locations are provided by clicking on How To Get There .
WHISKEY CAFE - LATIN NIGHT - Sundays, once per month, see Calendar for exact dates. 8:00 PM until late. Music by DJ Ray Colon , who plays a lot of classic salsa.
